The motive behind the Avatar Program and this entire Earth operation is to monopolize access to valuable deposits known as unobtanium.  It is considered to be a rare mineral in the future of 2154 when fuel reserves become scarce.

Jake gets a change of heart and abandons the mission once he realizes the full scale of the destruction it would cause.  Eventually he finds his place among the Omaticaya and wins the heart of the strong and lovely Princess Neytiri.
